Maryelen Calderwood running for 3rd term on Greenfield School Committee

GREENFIELD — Maryelen Calderwood is running for her third term on the Greenfield School Committee to continue the board’s efforts toward improving the quality of education for Greenfield students.

Calderwood, 51, of 82 Sanderson St., is one of two candidates running unopposed in the June 10 election for two three-year seats.

A 37-year resident of the town and Greenfield High School alumna, Calderwood has one son in the Greenfield school system. She won elections to the School Committee in 2008 and 2011 and is the longest-serving member of the board.

“I will continue to keep a watchful eye on privatizing efforts which will undermine (the school board’s) good work,” said Calderwood.

“I have never been in favor of breaking our district down into separate schools,” she said. “Every child should, at the very least, be offered equal access to our curriculum.”

Calder-wood, who chairs a subcommittee that tackles health and safety issues, said she wants to continue creating a “safer, healthier, greener (and) more diverse district.”

She also wants to see a stronger curriculum, more open communication between teachers and the School Committee and a “vast improvement in educator morale.”

She works at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, managing the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program, which provides counseling for faculty and staff. She also is manager and organizer for the University Staff Association, a clerical union.

Calderwood also works part-time for the Massachusetts Teachers Association as a senate district coordinator for Sen. Stanley Rosenberg’s district. That job is “a lobbying effort for good legislation and adequate funding for public education, from pre-K through higher education,” she said.

She has attended Greenfield Community College and Vermont College. She received her master’s degree from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in American studies and is currently completing graduate work in labor studies.
