Pipe bursts at PVRS
NORTHFIELD — One person’s carelessness is being blamed for a burst pipe in the Pioneer Valley Regional School auxiliary gym.
“Somebody wedged open a door on the north side of the building and a sprinkler head froze,” said Fire Chief Floyd “Skip” Dunnell III. “It sent water cascading across both gyms’ floors.”
The chief said the gym had been open for a community exercise session before the call came in at 5:38 p.m. Friday.
“We were able to get the water mopped up pretty quickly,” he said. “We shut down the sprinkler system, isolated the leak and squeegeed the water out. It was freezing as we did so.”
Dunnell said firefighters and school personnel were able to prevent major damage to the building.
“The damage was minimal,” he said. “They will have to replace the sprinkler pipe, and there was a little damage to the ceiling tile, as well.”
It was the coldest day of the new year, and temperatures had begun to dip below 0 degrees Friday evening, reaching well below 0 overnight.
