the story is very good, but how about a thank you to all of the firefighters and other first responders that responded who devoted their time and energy to aid the neighbor in need.
Bill T.- Consider contacting the Colrain snowmobile club, members may be interested in some trail work, although fall is usually when they do the most.
Yes, GPS's can be a little confusing for any first time user. Any reputable sales store that has them should be more then happy to go over the basics with anyone. Once you know the basics the things are really easy to use. I know REI will go over the use of them if you ask.
I am leading a volunteer effort to clear some of the Catamount SF forest roads/trails of ice storm damage over on the west side. We've got a work day planned for July 18th Saturday. Please consider joining us. We'll met at 9:30AM at the forest boundary on N. River Road and go in from there. Other dates later this summer.
A - I've hiked and biked up there many times as well and, from recent photos, large portions of the area are unrecognizable due to the ice storm damage.
The GPS device is a great idea. Some old farts like myself probably do not know what one is and what it can do or how to use it.
But the auto versions are cheap, everyone has seen them, and they seem to work OK.
The GPS concept has to be an unbelievable boon to salesmen or delivery drivers.
A very good idea.
As a avid hiker and tracker I think it is wonderful that this man in his 70s is out hiking and has the health to do it. More power to him and I hope he continues to do it, however I do suggest though that a loving family member please purchase and teach this man how to use a GPS (Global Position System)...it could save his life someday; they are light weight and not very expensive. He could simply plot his home and only have to turn the device on if he needed to. A GPS will work anywhere; I used one in Alaska as a emergency back-up. Even the best trained trackers can get disoriented!
If Matthew Wolfe gets his evil way to build his toxic MADera Energy, Inc. BioMESS, no one will get lost in Western Massachusetts ever again because all the trees will be gone!
SAVE THE VALLEY!!!

SAVE OUR RIGHT TO GET LOST IN THE WOODS!!!
So that's what K-9 unit and the helicopter were for! I was wondering what all the excitement was about that night.
Many of you have obviously never hiked on Catamount Hill. It is very easy to get lost up there!
Several years ago a couple got lost up there overnight.
Catamount isnt lake pleasant or the montague plains people, and the fact that he goes out hiking more than once a week is fantastic considering his age. Think a little before you criticize people.

Im very happy that this man was found alive and well.
There is a part of this that makes me ill.
When I heard some people talking about this, I heard them talking about the cost of the rescue and how that cost would have to come out of some part of the towns budget somewhere else later in the year. That because of the cost of things like this, there would be other shortfalls. They said the equipment and supplies of the State Police were what was most effective in locating the man, and that fire/rescue should not have been engaged until after the person had been located or State Police summoned the EMS/Rescue team then. WOW! That hit me! The idea that we in the hill towns would have to choose between a budget and launching a search just scares me to pieces. I know there is no hope of Boston giving the towns involved the $ to cover any shortfalls generated by the expense of saving a life, but I personally think a persons life is worth any expense or shortfall. Id like to think Id still think that way, even if I was the fire fighter or police who might loose my job because of the shortfall. Sad, thought, isnt it?
