Talkback: News

Greenfield voters head to polls today

Published on June 09, 2009

GREENFIELD -- While mayoral candidate William Martin spent the day before town elections walking various Greenfield neighborhoods and talking with residents one last time, his opponent, Alfred Siano, spent the day gardening and doing lawn work.

Reader comments:

Not Gitmo, he'll set up a prison camp for dissenters across the border, in VT.

Maybe on an island in Lake Champlain......

OMG Greenfield has a Republican Mayor. The town will invade Colrain and Leyden by July 15th and the anti-war protestors on the common will be headed to Gitmo shortly afterward. What a great city Greenfield.

Don't go away mad...

Flex, I knew with absolute certainty that you'd be back to gloat noisily- what stellar sportsmanship you display... not.

Maybe this will take some of the taste of sour grapes away from having to live under a "tyrannical-socialist-muslim-terrorist-loving elitist." (LOL!)

Congratulations to Bill Martin and the other winners tonight. I hope they serve Greenfield wisely, and learn some lessons from the past six years.

Auf Weidersehn Alfie!

Sayonara Siano!

It really sounds good no matter which way you say it.

Will he really resign his council seat as promised?

"I can't answer that question..."

eehwwww....time for the nose rubbing. Where were all the write in's? It's going to be big you said. All the supporter were going to turn out you said. Oh I guess they did. Sorry but it had to be done. The arrogance of Forgey and her supporter needs to be chastised. That being done lets move on and hope that Martin can keep it fair. If everyone suffers the same then all can recover together. Best of luck Alfie!

Yea!

For a minute there, I thought the loonies would win!

8:15 pm - This just in. Bill

Voting results per:

http://www.powertownedistro.com/

Martin has been elected the next Mayor of Greenfield.

Martin - 2074

Siano - 1528

Forgey - 556

Mavric, You are right. But, Remember People VOTED to make this a City. But, It has been very slow at getting to a City level. Most of the papers I get still say Town of greenfield Not the City of Greenfield.

I know that Chris will continue to get us there. She is trying to fix what the Town Coun. Did before she took office. Infact we are now in a better place.

We would have a Big Box store if Al did no file all those law suits against the builders/City.

She is not at fault. She has done a good job. Better that what is offered to us now to pick from.

I am looking for someone that will back the companies that are already here and also, work for growth. There is more she can do.

But, It is still better than what Al or Martin said to me. Infact they did not say much when I talked to them. I was hoping for better answers. I don't get local chanels to watch the debates. so, I prefer to meet in person. If they can not do that and stand up on their own two feet. Well, They are not worth it.

I keep my vote with Chris.

Marty: We miss your post-election analysis show!

Good to know we're on the same page -still. I think most people are for Forgey. Just hope they braved the rain to vote today.

Not that the other two would be awful for Greenfield, oh but wait they really would be.

By my logic says Siano takes the day.Under normal circumstances this city is divided almost 50/50 between camps and the race would be much too close to call. However this year Al has the biomass issue on his side which a big concern to a lot of people. Also Martin and Forgey are so similar politically a write-in vote for her is just one less vote for Martin. I think the combination of these two things will be enough to put Al over the top. I guess we will find out soon enough

You know, I research the information given and I come up with the same conclusion every way I look at it. Were better off as a town! Both of these fools are going to run us into the ground. Lets see. They BOTH plan to kill the Police Department. They BOTH plan to kill the Fire Department. Oh lets not forget about the abuse they plan on putting the entire school system through. AND if it gets too tough for them, theyre going to walk away. One term and theyre out at best. Neither of them are committed to doing a good job. This is a popularity medal for the winners lapel and thats all. Greenfield is starring straight into the barrel of disaster! We have NO possible way to survive this! You both should back out and allow someone with actual desire to help the city take over! THIS SUCKS!!!

Town, City... what difference does it make? It doesn't really matter how you label it... either way it's got the same concerns.

Let's not get all tangled up in semantics at the expense of the real issues.. how to make it the best Greenfield it can be.

to the Al all the way,

You need to get your brain straight. THIS IS NOT A TOWN Period. WE are a CITY. can you spell that!

This is the problem with this city is even the people working at CITY Hall keep calling it a town. We no longer have the funds that reflect a town and bills just got larger. NOT Smaller like we were told.

We as a CITY Need to get past this before we can move on. PERIOD

I did VOTE did YOU:

I voted too!

Good luck to Martin!

Al Siano is a man of integrity. He questions ideas where others (Forgey and Martin)run full steam ahead, right into a 250' smoke stack.

Make your vote count for something and support the candidate who will keep downtown vital.

Marty McGuane, I am happy you are not sick any more, but give me a break. Forgey is a lost cause and it is embarrassing to the town to keep bringing up that dead horse. She was a disaster from the start and the town is better off for her leaving, and for taking Morrocco with her.

I hope that we can look forward to real time results here in the Comments section tonight by the Recorder or other commenters. Also, GCTV should have some coverage around 8 PM and the local website www.powertownedistro.com is running a liveblog from the high school and the two campaign headquarters.

If the facts are:

- Martin chose to actively campaign yesterday

- Siano chose to garden yesterday

What makes the Recorder biased by reporting what happened yesterday?

You must be joking about re-electing Forgey. Greenfield is in DIRE straights and though she cannot be blamed for all of it, she sure had a hand in it. It's time for CHANGE (as it was when she was unfortunately re-elected last time). I don't even care who wins today as long as it's not her (and I voted for her the first time, so it's not personal).

Greenfield"

...And bring your $20 fine with you:

http://www.mass.gov/legis/laws/mgl/54-65.htm

"Whoever posts, exhibits, circulates or distributes any poster, card, handbill, placard, picture or circular intended to influence the action of a voter, or any paster to be placed upon the official ballot, in violation of any provision of this section, shall be punished by a fine of not more than twenty dollars."

(just a friendly cautionary note to ALL)

For those of you that are unsure about the Biomass plant Al Siano is your man. He wants an independent environmental impact study

done before any decisions are made. Martin seems to have thrown caution to the wind on this subject.

I agree for the most part with 'Come On, Really?' but I'm not sure that the Recorder should endorse whomever they wish. Should they endorse at all? They're not Fox News. They're not MSNBC. There is no good reason for flagrantly slanted local news. Period.

Good morning, and happy Election Day!

I would once again like to urge the voters of Greenfield to consider returning Mayor Christine Forgey to the corner office. I, and many other supporters, believe that she has done a tremendous job for Greenfield given the situation she walked in to in 2003 and what has transpired since. I have nothing against either of the other candidates, but I think that Mayor Forgey has all the tools to do the job. When you go to the polls, stop by the Forgey tent and ask for a voter's slip. All the information you need to write in her name is included.

Please join me in Writing-In and Re-Electing Christine Forgey Mayor of Greenfield!

Greenfield

Stop yer whinin and complainin, Get yer arses off yer seat and go

cast yer vote.

Just when you think the Recorder can't stoop any lower ... they outdid themselves with this article.

Sorry, Recorder, just because Bill Martin pays you $$$ doesn't mean I'm going to cast my vote for him.

I know the Recorder has come out in support of Bill Martin and they should endorse whomever they wish, but this final article is yet another in a series of embarrassingly biased articles. If there intention was that I would be appalled that Siano was gardening while Martin was "working" for the election, they failed miserably. I laughed out loud when I read the first paragraph and patted myself on the back for having not renewed my paying subscription.
