Glennice E. Berry

ORANGE -- Glennice E. (Turner) Berry, 70, of 519 East River St., formerly of Athol and Erving, died on Monday evening, Dec. 14, 2009, at Baystate Franklin Medical Center, Greenfield, following an illness.

Born in Gardner on Oct. 29, 1939, she was a daughter of the late Glenn E. and Blanche (Girouard) Turner and grew up in Athol.

Glennice was married to Ralph C. Berry on Oct. 7, 1955 and had enjoyed 48 years together at the time of his death on Jan. 8, 2003.

Glennice moved to Erving in 1957 and became very involved in the community. She was an election poll worker from 1982 until 2001, served on the Erving Recreation Commission for four years, the Erving Zoning Board of Appeals for nine years, the Route 2 Safety Committee, a member of the Erving Congregational Church and its Ladies Aid Committee and also served as co-editor and treasurer of the Erving town newsletter, ''Around Town,'' from 1984 until 2001.

Glennice retired in 2000 after working 13 years for the Department of Veterans Services, both in Orange and Turners Falls.

She enjoyed gardening, knitting, crocheting and cake decorating, and later in life she became involved in and an advocate for the Hospice of Franklin County in Greenfield. She also was a den mother with Erving Boy Scouts.

Survivors include daughters, Crystal Bouthillier of Athol and Sheri-Marie Leonard of Orange; a son, Scott Berry of Athol; eight grandchildren including Jennifer Berry from Alabama, whom she helped raise; 10 great-grandchildren; several nephews and nieces, and a foster son, Arthur Cash, from Chesapeake, Va.

Besides her husband, Glennice was predeceased by a daughter, Faylene Robichaud of Gardner on Jan. 18, 2006, and an infant son, Ralph Berry Jr. in June of 1971; sisters, Esther Howard and Betty Tucker.

There are no calling hours.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 20, 2009 at 2 p.m., at Witty's Funeral Home, 158 South Main St., Orange.

Interment in Erving Center Cemetery will be private in the spring of 2010.
