NORTHFIELD -- A layer of snow, a chill in the air, sunshine and a cloudless sky helped make the fourth annual ''A Special Day in Northfield'' exactly that.
About a dozen shops and restaurants throughout Northfield offered a day of holiday shopping and family activities on Saturday.
Luke Hrinda, 5, and his sister, Megan, 8, of Deerfield took advantage of a free ride in a carriage pulled by Connor, an 18-year-old Hackney horse.
Connor and his guests were being escorted by Melissa Onorati of Silver Ranch in Jaffrey, N.H.
''It's nice that people get to see an old-fashioned mode of transportation,'' Onorati said. ''It makes a nice touch for the event.''
''I think the horse did a good job,'' Megan said.
