Deb Grant of Greenfield uses a downward kick to break boards to 'Warm the Children' at Tae Kwon Do Center in Greenfield.

That pile of lumber, said Dr. David Johnson, 'is a symbol of the work that we're doing.'

That pile was the remains of shattered wooden boards broken by students at the Greenfield Tae Kwon Do Center on Saturday in an effort to raise money for the Recorder's Warm the Children program.

Johnson is the master instructor at the center.

Students collect pledges based on how many boards they would break during the event.

The break-athon has raised almost $30,000 for the Recorder's Warm the Children campaign since 2003.
