Red Hawks host Warriors tonight

It has been 20 years of agony for the Mohawk Trail Regional High School football team in its annual game with Frontier Regional School, but all of the pain from losing could go away with a win tonight in the battle of two Intercounty League teams.

The Warriors and Red Hawks kick off the Franklin County Thanksgiving football festivities tonight with a 7 p.m. contest in South Deerfield. Although Frontier already knows it will be playing at least one more game after tonight, Mohawk's future is a little cloudier.

The good news for the Warriors (4-5 overall, 2-4 IL) is that they control their own destiny in the hunt for a spot in the WMass Division IV playoffs. With a win tonight, Mohawk would lock up the fourth and final spot, while a loss would leave the door open for other teams. The bad news for Mohawk is that it hasn't beaten Frontier (8-1, 5-1) since any of the players on the team have been alive, a losing streak that dates back to 1988 when Mohawk posted a 21-0 win. During that span, the Red Hawks have outscored the Warriors 510-134, and have posted three shutouts in the last four meetings, including last season's 24-0 win. Regardless of the outcome, Mohawk coach Jim Smith said it has been a solid season for his team, which has primarily consisted of 13 players. ...
