Just Plain Neighbors: 'Calendar season' brings scenes of old Quabbin days

[ Originally published on: Tuesday, November 24, 2009 ]

As part of the ''calendar season,'' I can always expect a Quabbin History calendar, created by J.R. Greene of Athol. And this year, it's his 25th Quabbin calendar.

There's the Swift River garage in Greenwich Village, South Street in North Dana with five little youngsters standing in the road, Camp Pomeroy in Greenwich, a summer camp for Jewish girls and Herrick's School in New Salem with 13 pupils and a teacher. The explanation was that it was not flooded, but it was taken for watershed protection purposes. I had never heard of a camp for Jewish girls. A Jewish boys' camp was on Quabbin Lake.

Greene writes quite a bit about each of the 12 photos.

Historic events pictured are a 1910 fire in Enfield, an Old Home Day parade and the last excursion train on the valley's railroad line in 1935.

Cost of the calendar, produced by Performance Press of Winchendon, is $14.95. It is available at World Eye Bookshop and Federal Street Books in Greenfield; Bruce's Browser and Haley's in Athol, General Store in New Salem, 202 Sunoco in Orange and Country Store in Petershm.

If you want to order from Greene, add $2.50 for shipping and sales tax at 26 Bearsden Road, Athol, 01331.

Greene will be signing his books and the calendar at Bruce's Browser at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 1. He'll also show a brief slide show.
