ASHFIELD -- Frederick W. Rice, 82, of 394 Norton Hill Road, died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009, at Charlene Manor Extended Care Facility in Greenfield.
He was born in Plainfield, Jan. 7, 1927, the son of Earnest and Bessie (Thatcher) Rice. He completed his junior year at Sanderson Academy in Ashfield before being drafted into the U.S. Army his senior year.
Prior to retirement, he was employed by Lamson & Goodnow Mfg. Co. in Buckland for several years.
Fred enjoyed helping people in Ashfield by doing yard work or snowplowing, and he enjoyed attending local fairs.
His wife, the former Ruth E. Field, predeceased him on May 8, 2003.
Survivors include his daughter, Cindy Clark and husband Nathan of Heath; two brothers, Milton E. Rice of Ashfield and Wesley M. Rice of Buckland; three granddaughters; one grandson; six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held Friday, Nov. 20, at 11 a.m. at Plain Cemetery in Ashfield with Rev. David Neil, pastor of Trinity Church in Shelburne Falls, officiating.
There are no calling hours.

Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home in Shelburne Falls is in charge of arrangements.
