SUNDERLAND -- A lone bugle played taps.
The solemn tribute to the country's fallen servicemen and women drifted over the Sunderland Town Offices Tuesday. It was the site of a Veterans Day observance ceremony, where Sunderland schoolchildren, residents and veterans, young and old, gathered to pay their respects to those who have sacrificed in the service of their country.
The gathering came one day before the federal holiday, and was organized by Sunderland Elementary School Principal Tim Merritt. The son of an Air Force pilot, he said the event was an important means of teaching students the true meaning of the holiday.
