State begins biomass wood supply study

[ Originally published on: Saturday, November 07, 2009 ]

The state has hired a consultant to study the sustainability of the fuel supply for wood-burning ''biomass'' power plants.

The state Department of Energy Resources has selected the Manomet Center for Conservation Services of Plymouth to lead a comprehensive study of issues related to biomass sustainability and carbon emissions policy.

The six-month study will result in a ''white paper'' that will assist state environmental and energy officials to prepare new regulations to establish sustainability criteria for biomass facilities. The study must be complete by next May 30.
