Let them bake cake

[ Originally published on: Friday, November 06, 2009 ]

A group of Turners Falls High School students wants to make sure children don't have to go without a birthday cake just because their parents can't afford to buy them one.

''It's pretty fun to see the smiles on the kids' faces that get the birthday cake,'' said senior Alex Peterson of Montague.

He and his fellow Reconnecting Youth classmates bake the cakes from scratch and then distribute them to children through the Survival Center in Turners Falls, the Family Inn in Greenfield and Jessie's House in Amherst.

''Since Turners is a really small community, a lot of people have experienced poverty,'' said senior Ashley Sears of Turners Falls. ''I think it really impacts kids and we thought it was a really great thing we could do.''
