Panthers jolt Athol

[ Originally published on: Wednesday, November 04, 2009 ]

Pioneer Valley Regional School did something no other Franklin County League girls' soccer team had done this season: beat Athol High School.

The Panthers earned their biggest win of the season Tuesday as a second-half Kayla Smith goal proved to be the difference in Pioneer's 1-0 victory over the Red Raiders, in Northfield.

The loss is only the second of the season for the Red Raiders, who dropped to 16-2-0 on the season. Pioneer (8-7-3), which had already clinched a berth in the WMass Tournament with Mohawk Trail Regional High School's loss to Athol last Friday, clinched outright control of second place in the FCL and knocked the Warriors from tournament contention.

''It was a really good win,'' Pioneer coach Heyden Martin said. ''It was a hard-fought win, everyone battles really hard and both teams were aggressive. It was a little stressful for me, but it was big for us to get the W today.''
