Shelburne selectmen decry theft of moose signs

[ Originally published on: Thursday, October 29, 2009 ]

SHELBURNE FALLS -- As charming as the ''moose crossing'' traffic signs were on Route 2, their purpose was serious: to warn motorists about the risk of crashing into a moose on the 50 mph highway.

But souvenir hunters have stolen the last two signs on the 5-mile stretch of the Mohawk Trail, between the Greenfield town line and Shelburne Falls.

''The moose population is growing, and those signs were there for a good reason,'' warned Shelburne Selectman Joseph Judd. He told fellow selectmen there were two ''close-calls'' between moose and motorists on Columbus Day weekend. One was on Saturday and the other on Sunday; both were within the area where the signs had stood until recently.

He noted that a large bull moose has been seen around Bardwells Ferry Road and a group of moose have been living near a beaver pond within a mile of Route 2 for the last three to four years. ''These are resident moose, pretty much getting a foothold into Shelburne,'' he said.
