BERNARDSTON -- Lionel ''Paul'' Gagnon Jr. has spent most of his adult life fighting fires and responding to emergency calls in the area -- always helping others, because that's what he loves.
''I didn't do it because I was looking for something in return,'' said Gagnon.
In the past two months, Gagnon has learned what ''one good turn deserves another'' really means.
It was a beautiful, sunny, clear Saturday when, on Aug. 1, Gagnon and his wife, Gayle, decided to take a motorcycle ride to Vermont, instead of cleaning the garage.
''It was such a beautiful day, we decided the garage could wait until Sunday,'' he said from his hospital (rehabilitation) room in Leeds.
The couple, traveling 45 mph in a 50 mph zone on their 2004 Harley Davidson, was coming around a corner on Route 100 near the entrance to Mount Snow, when they came upon a car that was at an almost complete stop as it was taking a turn. With little more than a couple of seconds to react, Gagnon hit the back of the car.
Dinner at the United Church of Bernardston on Church Street will begin at 5 p.m. There will be continuous seatings throughout the night.
Chicken pie, biscuits, beverages and dessert will be served by Daniel Devine, owner of Brad's Place in Greenfield. He is a friend of Gagnon.
Tickets ($10) will be sold at the door or can be obtained by calling Scott Gagnon at (413) 774-4785; from Devine at Brad's Place, Main Street, Greenfield; or by calling Gloria at Andy's Showroom in Greenfield at (413) 773-3139.
Donations may also be made to ''The Lionel ''Paul'' and Gayle Gagnon Fund, care of Greenfield Cooperative Bank, 63 Federal St., Greenfield, MA 01301. That account has so far raised $3,000.
