ATV search team makes debut in forest rescue

MONTAGUE -- A Chicopee woman who was lost in the woods near East Chestnut Hill Road Monday night was retrieved with the help of several police and fire agencies, including a new multi-town search and rescue group out on its first live mission.

According to police, Anne Hassel of Chicopee began her bicycle ride in Leverett on Monday afternoon.

''She started riding at the Leverett Co-op and went through the woods to the Wendell State Forest,'' said Montague Police Sgt. Charles ''Chip'' Dodge.

''She tried to follow a trail off East Chestnut Hill Road to get back, but night fell, she lost her ability to see the trail and ended up deep in the woods,'' he said. …
