Frank J. Yestramski

GREENFIELD -- Frank J. Yestramski, 85, of 170 Conway St., died Friday (10-16-09) at the Baystate Franklin Medical Center.

He was born in South Deerfield on June 28, 1924, the son of George and Petronella (Savickaus) Yestramski.

He graduated from South Deerfield High School and had been a resident of Greenfield since 1946.

Frank was employed for the United States Postal Service in Greenfield for 35 years, retiring as a window clerk in 1979.

He served with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Atlanta in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre of War during WWII and attained the rank of coxswain. He was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation and received the Purple Heart for wounds sustained in action. Also, he received the Asiatic Pacific Theatre of War Medal with 7 battle stars.

He was a communicant of Holy Trinity Church.

Frank was a member and past commander of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 33 and was a lifetime member of the Greenfield Lodge of Elks.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Also, he enjoyed watching Greenfield and Frontier High School sports and gardening.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, the former Marguerite E. Hohengasser; three sons, Francis J. of Greenfield, Thomas G. of Contoocook, N.H., and Michael C. of Waldorf, Md.; a daughter, Kathleen Daysh of Southampton; 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was pre-deceased by his brothers, John, George, Joseph and Charles Yestramski and by his sister, Patricia Edwall.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. in Holy Trinity Church with the Monsignor Ronald G. Yargeau, pastor, officiating.

There are no calling hours.

At the request of the deceased, his body was gifted to the University of Vermont for anatomical study.
