Edward F. Harris

EAST MONTPELIER, Vt. -- Edward F. Harris, 86, of East Montpelier, passed away in his home on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009, of complications from a massive stroke suffered the previous Friday.

Born in Holyoke, Mass., on April 20, 1923, he was the son of the late John and Charlotte (McKenna) Harris. A graduate of Holyoke High School, he lived in Holyoke until his marriage in 1962 to his beloved wife, Jeannette, when the couple moved to Westhampton, Mass. In July of this year they moved to Vermont to be near their family.

He was in the U.S. Army during the Second World War and served in France, where he was wounded and received the Purple Heart, and later in Austria.

He then worked for General Electric as an Electronics Testing Specialist in the Holyoke plant until that closed in 1965, when he joined Tubed Chemicals, later the Tubed Products division of McCormick Co., from which he retired in 1978.

He is survived by his wife, Jeannette (Rhodes) Harris; son, Anthony and his wife Donna of Worcester, Vt.; a sister, Phyllis McNeill of Holyoke; a brother, Robert of Chicopee, Mass.; four step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren and several niece and nephews.

In accordance with his wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral, but a memorial service will be held later at the family's convenience.
