DEERFIELD -- Eugene R. Klos Sr., 89, of River Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2009, in the Amherst Center for Extended Care.
He was born in Kenosha, Wis., Oct. 30, 1919, the son of Erwin and Catherine Klos. He graduated from Marquette University with degrees in engineering and law.
A veteran of WWII, he served in the Pacific Theatre, developing the Mark 2 Torpedo. This entailed service aboard carriers, subs and torpedo bombers.
After the war, he entered school and graduated with his law degree. However, engineering was his passion and he soon became a research engineer working in Minnesota and North Dakota.
He was recalled for the Korean War and was again assigned to undersea weapons in Key West, Fla.
After his discharge, he and his wife (Elsie) moved to Lee and he became plant engineer for a Division of Kimberly-Clark Paper Mills. In 1973, he became plant engineer for Esleeck Paper in Turners Falls, and moved to Deerfield, retiring in 1986. He drove a specialized school van for several years.
He was delighted to see the Red Sox win a World Series and often wondered if Tiger Woods has as many hole-in-ones as he (2).
He was a Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus and had the pleasure of knighting his father. He was an avid golfer, fisherman and bowler. He enjoyed greatly his boat and the Connecticut River and regularly fished the Holyoke Shad Derby.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Helen and Harriet, and leaves his wife Elsie; a son, Gene Jr.; a daughter, Keverne and her husband James, and his pride and joy, four grandchildren, Farleigh, Kathryn, Alexandra and Kelsey.
