GREENFIELD -- On Sunday, 10-year-old Chloe Bullock went on a hike to Sachem's Head to show her father the new platform that her fellow classmates at the Greenfield Center School had built.

She was so excited, but her glee was almost instantly destroyed as she saw that the platform was off its posts and part way down the western slope.

''You should have seen her face drop when she saw it,'' said her mother, Joni Bullock.

In May, the Greenfield Center School's fourth- and fifth-graders, with the added help and muscle from their teachers and parents, made a new 2,000-pound wooden platform that was placed at Sachem's Head, which has a spectacular view of the nearby landscape from atop Rocky Mountain.
