COLRAIN -- A 10-year veteran of the town Police Department has been hired as the town's next police chief.
Jason Haskins, who has been a part-time Colrain officer since May 1999, was appointed to the vacant chief's position by selectmen Monday night.
Haskins, who has served full-time on the Greenfield Police Department since 2007, is currently attending the Massachusetts State Police Training Academy in New Braintree, which offers municipal police as well as state police training programs.
Town Coordinator Fred Rees said Haskins will begin as acting chief on Aug. 18; working predominantly nights and weekends while he completes his police academy training. In February, the selectmen and the police chief selection committee will evaluate Haskins' job performance before voting to make him the town's permanent chief.
