Edith W. Maynard

GREENFIELD -- Edith W. Maynard, 97, of Greenfield, formerly of Bethel, Vt., died Sunday morning, July 19, 2009, at Cozy Corner Nursing Home in Sunderland.

She was born June 19, 1912 in Brownsburg, Quebec, Canada, the daughter of William and Edith Gallow. Her family moved to Hardwick, Vt., in 1919, where she was educated graduating from Hardwick Academy in 1930.

Edith was married to Ralph Oscar Maynard in Hardwick on Jan. 1, 1938, and lived in Bethel for 68 years. She had worked as clerk at the Ben Franklin Store. She worked at the Whitcomb High School hot lunch program and for Mill's Store for 20 years.

She was a member of the United Church of Bethel, where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir.

Edith enjoyed sports (The Celtics), music, gardening and being with her family. In later years she enjoyed baking zucchini and banana bread, and she gave generously to those in need. She moved to the Arbors in Greenfield in 2008, where she lived until moving to Cozy Corners Nursing Home.

Survivors include her sons, Stuart O. Maynard of Norwood and Naples, Fla., and Gary B. Maynard of South Deerfield; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband of 51½ years, Ralph Oscar Maynard; brother, William Gallow, and sister, Christine Coates.

Calling hours will be from 12:30 to 2 p.m., Thursday, July 23, with the casket being closed at 1 p.m., followed by funeral services at 2 p.m., all at the Day Funeral Home in Randolph, Vt., with Pastor Thomas Harty officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Bethel. A reception will follow the burial at the White Church in Bethel.
