COLRAIN -- At about 5:15 p.m. on Sunday, Steven Warnecke, 70, of East Catamount Hill Road went up the hill to trim some branches that had fallen on nearby trails during the winter's ice storm and then take a quick hike before supper.
He didn't make it home until eight hours later.
Warnecke said he'd finished his trimming for the day and started on what he thought would be a quick hike. 'I turned to the right, but I'd went a little farther than usual,' Warnecke said, remembering the hike in his living room on Monday afternoon. 'I'd lost my sense of direction.'
He decided to head in the direction the sun was setting, to the west. 'That was the obvious direction to go. I knew from past experiences that you just choose a direction and eventually you come to something.'
He said he hikes in the woods around the house two or three times a week and has gotten lost before, although not for as long as on Sunday evening.
