Virgil E. Simmonds

GREENFIELD -- Virgil E. Simmonds, formerly of Baltimore, Md., died Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at the Buckley HealthCare Center.

Born in Oswegatchie, N.Y., on June 15, 1919, he was the son of Elmer and Leta Simmonds.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Elva Kidd.

He is survived by his wife, Clara Ercelle Hylton Simmonds; sons, Dale Simmonds of Mineral, Va., and Tim Simmonds of Greenfield, and daughters, Bonnie Simmonds Landes of Palmyra, Pa., and Linda Simmonds Huber of Ballwin, Mo. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Matthew and Kendra Landes, Christopher and Jonathan Simmonds, Colin and Timothy Huber, and Brandie, Amy and Jeffrey Simmonds, as well as a nephew, Earl Kidd.

Virgil retired in 1983 from Strayer Equipment Co. in Baltimore, as an accountant, where he worked for 28 years.

He had been an active member of the First Church of the Brethren in Baltimore, where he served as an usher and a trustee and more recently, Lochearn Presbyterian Church, where he served as usher and accountant.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 10, at 7 p.m. at the Palmyra Church of the Brethren, located at 45 North Chestnut St., Palmyra, PA 17078 with the Rev. Dr. Wallace Landes and the Rev. L. Dale Hylton officiating.
