Phyllis B. Joyce

AMHERST -- Phyllis Bray Joyce, 84, previously of Amherst, died Saturday, May 9, 2009, at Charlene Manor Extended Care Facility in Greenfield.

She was born in Buckland, April 16, 1925, the daughter of Philip and Gladys (Bray) Joyce. She graduated from Arms Academy, Class of 1943, and continued her study of library science at Simmons College.

Phyllis was a librarian at the University of Rhode Island, University of Massachusetts and retired as reference librarian at Mount Holyoke.

Phyllis loved her many cats, appreciated good books and good classical music on public radio.

She leaves five cousins, Jack Fontaine of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Jeanne Fontaine Frank of Las Vegas, Nev., Francis Fontaine of San Francisco, Calif., Betty Moser of Williston, Vt., and Susan Roberts of Shelburne Falls. She also leaves her loving family of caregivers on Unit 3 at Charlene Manor.

Graveside services will be held Friday, May 15, at 11:30 a.m. at Arms Cemetery in Shelburne Falls.

It is suggested donations be made to the Philip Joyce Kiwanis Scholarship, in care of Robert Fischlein, 36 Main St., Shelburne Falls, MA 01370.

Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home in Shelburne Falls/Greenfield is in charge of arrangements.
