BERNARDSTON -- South Street was flooded with blue and red emergency lights and packed with police cars and fire trucks after a car crash on Wednesday night.
A witness at the scene said at least one person died. The accident happened around 8:20 p.m.
Michael Powers of Brookside Avenue in Greenfield said that he happened upon the scene soon after the crash, just as firefighters were being called. He said there were victims lying on the ground. Powers said that one victim was so badly injured that the person was ''obviously killed.''
After firefighters arrived, Powers said, that victim was covered completely with a blanket. Nearby lay at least one other victim and emergency responders at the scene began treating that person.
Powers said the vehicle, a dark red Ford SUV, looked as though it had rolled over several times, gone through a steel rail barrier and ended up in the woods. There is a sharp curve in the road and he said it appeared the vehicle had left the roadway as it approached the curve.
The Bernardston Fire Department responded very quickly, Powers said.
The crash is under investigation by officer Shawn Coughlin of the Bernardston Police Department.
The state police, Gill and Northfield police assisted at the scene. Baystate Health Ambulance responded and Life Flight helicopters were called.
Around 9 p.m., police officers surrounded the area with yellow tape. Shortly after, Police Chief Jason Bunk arrived on the scene.
Bernardston police were unavailable for comment at press time.
