GREENFIELD -- Four Masonic lodges in Franklin County and one in Athol will hold open houses on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
According to District Deputy Grand Master John White of the 26th Masonic District, the lodges will be observing Square and Compass Day, which is an opportunity to learn abut the work of Masons and their charitable efforts, along with some of the ancient organization's history.
The four Franklin County lodges are Mountain Lodge of Masons on Main Street in Shelburne Falls, Republican Lodge of Masons on Munson Street in Greenfield, Mount Sugarloaf Daylight Lodge in South Deerfield, currently using a hall at the Congregational Church, and Harmony Lodge of Masons on Masonic Avenue in Montague City, diagonally across from the Farren Care Center. There is also the North Quabbin Lodge of Masons on Main Street in Athol, which is the fifth lodge in the 26th Masonic District.
There will be exhibits of historical nature concerning the lodges, including both Republican Lodge and Harmony Lodge, both of which were chartered by Paul Revere when he was Grand Master of Masons in Massachusetts.
