Bulletin Board: UVM beats UMass, 3-2
Two goals inside the first minute of play set the early tone for UMass Friday night, but Vermont controlled the last 59 minutes to post a 3-2 Hockey East victory over the Minutemen at the Mullins Center in Amherst.
Adam Phillips got UMass (3-8-2, 1-5-2 HE) on the board 15 seconds into the action, crashing the net to put in the rebound of Conor Sheary’s initial shot. At the 59-second mark, Steven Iacobellis finished on a 2-on-1 break when he redirected Ray Pigozzi’s pass from the left wing past Vermont goalie Brody Hoffman for his fifth goal of the season.
UVM went on the power play at 7:11 of the first when UMass’ Joel Hanley took a holding penalty. Colin Markison pulled a goal back for the Catamounts at 8:26, deflecting a shot from the left point by Michael Paliotta.
Vermont (4-5-1, 3-4-0 HE) then tied it on the man-advantage at 7:41 of the second when Pete Massar tipped in Paliotta’s shot from the point. At 14:10, just seven seconds after UMass’ Oleg Yevenko drew a five-minute major for kneeing and a game misconduct, UVM’s Nick Bruneteau threw a shot at the net through Massar’s screen that eluded Minuteman goalie Steve Mastalerz for a 3-2 Catamount lead. The Minutemen got Mastalerz (26 saves) off the ice for most of the final two minutes in favor of an extra attacker, but fell to 0-4-1 in their last five games.
Hoffman made 21 saves to earn the victory for Vermont.
The teams finish their weekend home-and-home series Sunday at 4 p.m. at Gutterson Field House in Burlington, Vt.
