Warriors beat Ware, near playoff spot

BUCKLAND — The Mohawk Trail Regional High School football team is one road win away from clinching a berth in the postseason.

The Warriors continue to control their own playoff destiny, in part, because of a decisive 30-6 Tri-County League win over Ware High School on Senior Night at Pollard Field.

“I’m happy with the way our kids have performed this season, and I’m going to miss this group of seniors,” first-year Mohawk coach Doug McCloud said. “I didn’t think we played especially well in the first half, but we did what we needed to do and now it’s on to next week.”

A win at Pathfinder Vocational High School Regional on Friday night will give the Warriors (6-1) a berth in the Division VI playoffs, and they were leaving nothing to chance on this night, opening the scoring on the first series when junior Steven Reynolds (11 carries, 104 yards) capped an 11-play, 62-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run. Quarterback Andrew Doty hit Alex Dekoschak for the two-point conversion pass to make it 8-0.

Mohawk would extend the lead late in the second quarter, when junior back Billy Gray (five carries, 75 yards) took a Doty handoff up the middle for a 30-yard touchdown run. Doty hit Keith Whitaker for the conversion pass to make it 16-0.

The Warriors appeared poised to take a three-touchdown lead into the half when Doty intercepted a pass from Ware quarterback Hunter Miller and ran it back 97 yards for the touchdown as time expired, only to have it nullified because of a block-in-the- back penalty behind the play.

Mohawk did a good job keeping the Ware running attack in check, holding the Indians to just 48 yards rushing and sacking Miller twice. The same could not be said for the secondary, which gave up 147 yards passing to Miller, 76 of which came on Ware’s only touchdown of the night, which occurred when Miller hit back Zared McCoy with a pass over the middle on a fake punt on fourth-and-six from the Indian 24.

The Warriors would get that one back on the next series, when Doty connected with senior Luke Looman on a 56-yard touchdown pass. Reynolds rounded out the scoring on the next series, when he blasted around the right end for a 35-yard touchdown run. Doty scored two-point conversion on a quarterback sneak.

Ware (3-4) was eliminated from playoff contention with the loss.
