Green Wave field hockey settles for 1-1 tie

Rachel Lapointe scored with 18 minutes left in the game and Greenfield High School survived a scare to register a 1-1 independent field hockey draw against Palmer High School Thursday in Palmer.

Palmer (3-5-2) had an upset on its mind early as Emily Czaja scored 10 minutes into the game to put the Panthers ahead. Palmer goalie Kelsey Kokosa then did her part to try and keep the Green Wave (5-4-2) off the board. Kokosa wound up making 18 saves on the day, but the Green Wave upped the pressure in the second half, controlling much of the play, as it held Palmer to zero shots on goal. The Green Wave finally managed to break through with 17:57 to play as Alyssa Garvin set up Lapointe.

“We didn’t step to the ball today and they did,” Greenfield coach Erin Thayer said. “That was the difference.”

Maureen Fish finished with two saves for Greenfield, which needs six points in its final seven games to secure its first postseason berth since 2009.

Holyoke 5, Pioneer 0 — Meghan Goshea scored three times to lead Holyoke High School to a 5-0 West Division win over Pioneer Valley Regional School Thursday in Northfield.

Goshea scored the only two goals of the first half to put the Purple Knights (7-3-0) up 2-0 at the break. Bridget Higgins assisted on both Goshea goals and then scored the first two goals of the second half to put Holyoke in control. Goshea added one more goal late in the game to finish off the scoring.
