Turners Falls High School swept the three singles matches on Thursday and remained unbeaten on the season with a 4-1 victory over Springfield School of Science & Technology in a Tri-County League boys’ tennis match in Turners Falls.

The only loss of the day by the Indians (5-0 overall, 4-0 TCL) came at second doubles, where the team had to forfeit due to lack of players.

But that mattered little as the singles teams and first doubles pairings were shown little resistance. Summer Forest-Bulley got things going at No. 1, where he knocked off Wayne Ferrell, 6-2, 6-1. Ken Leng also lost a total of just three games at second singles where he earned a 6-3, 6-0 win over Hakeen Hopper-Collins. Dennis Gheorghita finished off the singles sweep with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Fue Reh at No. 3.

In the only contested doubles match of the day, Spencer Hubert and Alex Gheorghita earned a point for the Indians with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Anthony Nascembeny and Isaac Bermudez.

Turners hosts Belchertown High School Monday at 4.

Girls’ tennis

Belchertown 5, Turners 0 — Belchertown High School earned its first TCL win of the season by besting Turners Falls, 5-0, in girls’ tennis action Thursday in Belchertown.

Meredith Brown played a strong match for the Indians at first singles in a 6-4, 7-5 loss to the Orioles’ Rachel Gustafson. Sara Bradley also played well for Turners, as she took Vicki Law to three sets before Law claimed a 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 win.

Turners (0-4) hosts St. Mary High School today at 3:30.

Palmer 3, Greenfield 2 — A sweep of the doubles helped Palmer High School edge Greenfield High School, 3-2, in independent girls’ tennis action Thursday at the Davis Street Courts in Greenfield.

Manisha Malik earned one of the Green Wave’s points by outlasting Taylor Mastrianni, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, at first singles. Alexis Silk also won her match, besting Liane Martin, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 2 singles.

“We could have won this thing,” said Greenfield head coach Barry McColgan. “But no excuses, we played a hard match, we just came up a couple of games short.”

Greenfield (4-1) travels to Sci-Tech on Monday at 3:30.

Softball

Quabbin 6, Athol 3 — Quabbin Regional High School scored five times in the sixth inning to post a 6-3, come-from-behind, independent softball win over Athol High School Thursday in Athol.

The score was tied at 1-1 until the bottom of the fifth when Athol scored two runs to take a 3-1 lead. Quabbin answered in the top of the next inning to take the lead for good.

Athol starting pitcher Tricia Hazen (one strikeout, three walks, five hits) issued a walk to leadoff hitter Katie Caruso and she scored on the very next play as Athol shortstop Olivia Smith made the first of her two errors in the inning when she threw a ball away. Quabbin loaded the bases on a single and walk, and Alex Morrissey came up with the big hit of the day by clubbing a two-run double to put the Panthers in front to stay. That was followed by an RBI ground-out and another error by Smith to allow the final run to score.

“It was really disappointing,” Athol coach Colleen Bannister said. “When you walk the first batter of the inning, it can make things really hard.”

That made a winner out of Maggie Lacwasan, who struck out six and allowed eight hits and two walks in the complete-game effort.

The Red Raiders (3-3) trailed 1-0 until the bottom of the third when Kiki Guerin (four hits) belted an RBI double to score Smith (two hits), who had singled earlier in the inning. Guerin then put the Red Raiders in front in the bottom of the fifth when she hit a two-run single to score Smith and Liz Arpide (double).

Athol hosts Mohawk Trail Regional High School Monday afternoon at 4.
