Brandl lifts Greenfield to 5-4 hockey win

Josh Brandl scored with 37 seconds left in regulation to help Greenfield High School edge Central High School, 5-4, in an independent hockey game Tuesday night at Collins-Moylan Arena in Greenfield.

It was the second goal of the contest for Brandl, who was assisted by Jake Elwell.

Elwell and Dylan Dodge each registered tallies within the first two minutes to put the Green Wave (7-5-0 overall) on top 2-0.

Ben George, James Hager and Matt Cieboter all scored by the 11:40 mark of the middle frame to give the Golden Eagles (3-9-2) a 3-2 lead, but Clay Richardson tied with 6 seconds left in the stanza.

Brandl’s first marker at 7:19 vaulted Greenfield back in front, 4-3, but George struck at 8:52 to pull Central even, setting up Brandl’s game-winner.

Greenfield held a commanding 53-27 advantage in shots.

Noah Foster-Marquis made 23 saves in the Green Wave net. Adam Alicea turned aside 48 shots for the Golden Eagles.

Swimming

Turners wins

Jay Fritz won the 50-yard freestyle and came in second in the 100 free and the Turners Falls High School boys’ swimming team picked up its first win of the season with a 51-9 victory over Cathedral High School in a C Division swim meet Tuesday in Turners Falls.

Fritz tallied personal-best times in both events as he swam to a time of 26.92 seconds in the 50 free to earn first place and then came in second in the 100 with a time of 1:00.35. Ian MacPhail won the 500 freestyle in a time of 6:54.64, while Alex Tirrell won the 100 backstroke in 1:22.87. Riley Palmer also picked up a first-place finish in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:32.16.

• On the girls’ side, Nicole John won the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly to lead the Indians to their third win of the season with a 43-29 victory over Cathedral.

John finished the 200 IM in 2:59.7 and finished the 100 butterfly in 1:27.27. Gabby Arzuaga won the 500 free in 8:39.9, Mackenzie Salls won the 100 back in 1:17.23, and Mackenzie Phillips won the 100 free in 1:09.23.

Wrestling

Frontier 60, Athol 22 — Chris Toomey and Ryan Chapdelaine each recorded falls inside of a minute to lead Frontier Regional School over Athol High School, 60-22, in a Tri-County League wrestling match Tuesday night at Mallet Gymnasium in Hadley.

Toomey, wrestling at 195 pounds, needed just 40 seconds to stop the Red Raiders’ Nick Sharp, while Chapdelaine (285) pinned Kencaid Stafford in 57 seconds.

The Red Hawks (1-3 TCL) also received three other pins. Ben McGranahan (106) dropped Jordan Carrasquillo in 1:21, Saul Soto (160) felled Mike Kenniff in 4:36, and Andrew Lankarge (145) finished off Ryan Hulbert in 4:40
Athol (1-3) recorded two contested wins. Christian Currier (220) pinned Mike Mattson in 22 seconds, and Trevor Carey (126) earned a major decision against Gavin Hamill, 9-1.
