Orioles surprise Turners Falls, 3-2
Kim Drawec had eight aces, five kills and two blocks to lead 11th-seeded Belchertown High School to a 25-23, 25-12, 21-25, 23-25, 15-11 upset victory over sixth-seeded Turners Falls High School in the first round of the WMass Division III Volleyball Tournament Saturday night in Turners Falls.
Despite dropping the first two sets, the Indians (9-10) fought back with two straight wins to force a fifth set.
“Even though we lost, we fought all the way to the end and I couldn’t be prouder of this team,” Turners coach Kelly Yankowski said.
Erica Kamins chipped in three aces and three kills for Belchertown (11-9), while Selena Huber tallied five assists.
Mackenzie Salls registered five aces, seven digs, four kills and 28 assists for Turners Falls, while Shelby Lewis added 11 kills, 10 digs and three aces. Kim Rau collected three kills, four aces and 12 digs, and Sam Currier chipped in seven aces, three kills and eight digs. Bree Breault collected six kills and two aces, Elyssa Carner added eight digs, Amber Caouette recorded five kills and one block, and Emilee Felton finished with 12 digs and four aces.
Easthampton 3, Athol 1 — Easthampton High School dropped the first set against Athol High School, but stormed back to win the next three and took a 20-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-13 victory Sunday afternoon in the WMass Division III Girls’ Volleyball Tournament first round match in Athol.
The 10th-seeded Eagles (16-3) advance to take on No. 2 seed Mahar Regional School tonight at 6:30 p.m. in Orange.
Krystal Campbell went 13-for-13 from the serving line for the seventh-seeded Red Raiders (13-7), winning six points and also collecting eight assists and seven digs. Tessa Neverett went 13-for-15 from the line with 11 points, five kills and 29 digs. Annie MacLean finished 17-for-17 serving with nine points won and 26 digs.
