While Hurricane Sandy ravaged the East Coast Monday, local field hockey coaches in western Mass. learned their seeds in the Western Massachusetts Field Hockey Tournament.

Due to the storm, Monday morning’s seed meeting at Northampton High School was postponed, then rescheduled for the afternoon and the seeds were announced on the MIAA website.

Four local teams qualified for the Division I and II tournaments. The Division II tournament is the smallest it has ever been with just four teams qualifying. One of them, North Division champion Frontier Regional School, picked up the top seed.

The Red Hawks (13-4-1) edged out North Division rivals Smith Academy (11-3-4) and Mohawk Trail Regional High School (7-6-4), which picked up the second and third seeds. Pioneer Valley Regional School (10-5-1) is the fourth team in Division II after finishing second in the West Division.

The four teams all qualify for the semifinals next week when Pioneer takes on defending champion Frontier and Mohawk plays defending runner-up Smith Academy.

Mahar Regional School is once again moved up into the seven-team Division I tournament due to having a boy on the team. The Senators also moved up last season and made their way to the semifinals where they lost to eventual champion Longmeadow High School.

The Senators could again be on a crash course to meet the Lancers, who picked up the top seed in the tournament following a 16-0-2 campaign. Mahar (16-2-0) won the West Division and was seeded fourth, giving it a home game in the quarterfinals on Friday afternoon against Agawam High School.

The team Mahar beat last season in the quarterfinals, Minnechaug Regional High School (10-5-3) earned the second seed in Division I, while Northampton High School (14-1-3) earned the third seed.
