Schools Roundup: Indians on path to WM tourney

Turners Falls High School moved back to the .500 mark overall and continued its push toward the Western Massachusetts Division III Tournament as it defeated Mohawk Trail Regional High School, 25-20, 25-11, 25-22, in independent girls’ volleyball action Wednesday night in Turners Falls.

Shelby Lewis finished with six service aces, five kills, seven digs and two blocks for Indians, who improved to 5-5 overall.

Katelyn Dodge collected four kills, six digs and three aces, Amber Caouette logged five kills, three aces and two digs, and Kim Rau registered seven digs.

The Warriors fell to 3-4 overall.

Turners also won the junior varsity match, 25-8, 18-25, 15-12.

The Indians will hold an alumni game on Saturday night at 6.

Mahar 3, Belchertown 0 — Sabrina Silva totaled a dozen kills, nine aces and five digs to power Mahar Regional School past

Belchertown High School, 25-12, 25-13, 26-24, in an independent girls’ volleyball match Wednesday night at Grzesik-Bixby Complex in Orange.

Sam Pierson dished out 14 assists for the Senators (7-4), while Allie Barnes added six kills and three aces.

Emily Kubacki led the Orioles with 11 digs.

Athol 3, St. Bernard’s 1 — Athol High School bounced back from a first-set loss to beat St. Bernard’s Central Catholic High School of Fitchburg, 23-25, 25-11, 25-16, 25-15, in independent girls’ volleyball action Wednesday afternoon at Edgar “Bones” Mallet Gymnasium in Athol.

Tess Neverett led the Red Raiders (8-2 overall) with 19 digs, six kills and two aces. Annie MacLean added 14 digs, five aces and two kills, MaRyea Jennings collected six aces and three assists, and Lexi Hamlett contributed 10 assists and four aces.

Athol hosts Mahar Friday night at 7.

Field hockey

Pioneer 5, Southwick 0 — Shea Healy scored four times to lead Pioneer Valley Regional School to a 5-0 independent verdict in field hockey action Wednesday night in Southwick.

Marte Johannessen notched the other goal, Monique Pydych recorded two assists and Sarah Matherson and Megan Cote both contributed one assist for the Panthers, who led 4-0 at halftime.

Emily Walker made nine saves for Pioneer, which outshot the Rams, 37-9.

Pioneer (6-2-1) travels to Holyoke High School tonight at 7.

Agawam 4, Greenfield 1 — Agawam scored four times in the second half, including three in the final 10 minutes, to beat Greenfield High School, 4-1, in an independent field hockey game Wednesday in Agawam.

Tory Adams converted a pass from Rachel Lapointe to give the Green Wave a 1-0 lead 11:20 into the contest.

Greenfield, playing without two key starters, was able to keep the lead until Casey Noonan scored 3:30 into the second half. It remained tied until 9:19 left, when Mandy St. Laurent broke the deadlock, leading to a three-goal flurry in a 4:01 span. Angie Vecchiare and Taylor Misiorski had the final two markers.

Backup goalie filled in and made seven saves for Greenfield (2-8-0), which was outshot 11-5.
