West Side sends Red Raider spikers packing, 3-1
The season came to a close for the Athol High School boys’ volleyball team, which dropped a 25-20, 14-25, 25-12, 25-20 decision to West Springfield High School Tuesday in the WMass Boys’ Volleyball quarterfinals in West Springfield.
Athol finished the season 15-6 for one of the best finishes in program history. Coach Donna Lajoie said she is pleased with what the team did this season, but also felt like the Red Raiders could have won Tuesday.
“I was very disappointed with the outcome,” she explained. “I feel that we overall have more talent but where we were short today was at the net hitting. We gave them too many free balls. We tend to do that in higher-stake circumstances. Instead of attacking and hitting with everything we have, we pulled back and gave them easier passes.”
Wyatt Doiron-LaRue finished with eight kills, 13 digs and six blocks to pace the Red Raiders, while Erik Aikey finished with seven kills and three blocks. Tyler Lajoie added 15 assists and eight kills, Carter Amadon finished with five kills and two blocks, and Beau Guimond chipped in four kills and one block. Lorenzo Carra finished with 19 assists, and Nelson Leadbetter picked up 34 digs.
“It’s been a very enjoyable season and I am very proud of our accomplishments this year,” Lajoie said. “Wyatt will be sorely missed. He brings so much to the game. He is such a smart player. I hope the younger kids have learned a lot from him because he had a lot to teach.”
