It’s not even New Year’s Day and first-year coach Angelo Thomas and the Hopkins Academy boys’ basketball team already has matched last season’s win total.
The Golden Hawks outscored Frontier Regional School, 15-10, in the final frame Thursday evening to pick up their second win of the season, a 40-37 Hampshire League victory at Goodnow Gymnasium in South Deerfield.
Hopkins (2-1) finished last season with a 2-18 record, but was on pace to see improvement with a roster full of young players. Those players took another big step in their progression against the Red Hawks in the only boys’ basketball game in western Mass. on the day after Christmas.
The game was one of offensive futility, as Hopkins took a 14-13 lead into halftime. While the teams did combine for a bit more in the way of offense in the second half, neither was able to get fully on track. Frontier took a 27-25 lead into the fourth quarter, but Hopkins began getting some easy buckets as Frontier had some breakdowns underneath the hoop.
“Our on the ball defense was not very strong, and they got a lot of baskets around the hoop,” Frontier coach Ben Barshefsky said. “Our help-side defense was not stepping in to help shut down the driving lane. Give Hopkins credit, they deserved to win this game as much as we did.”
Zach Kelley hit two 3-pointers for the Golden Hawks en route to a game-high 18 points in the win. Brett Morrison scored 7 points and Spencer Butterfield added 6.
Tim Hoar led Frontier with 16 points and Ben Ruddock added 7 points.
Frontier travels to Northampton High School Saturday to take on Easthampton High School at 2 p.m. in the fourth annual Chase Your Dreams Basketball Classic to support the Jill E. Harrington Hanzalik Memorial Fund.
Frontier CYO falls
Amelia Sobieski and Marie Diemand each scored 4 points on Thursday, but the Frontier grades 5 & 6 Catholic Youth Organization girls’ basketball team suffered a 14-12 loss to Our Lady of Guadalupe in Holyoke.
Mandy Fuller and Hunter Keller each added 2 points for Frontier.
