Panthers smoke Hawks

SPRINGFIELD — To best treat the mindset of the visiting team after Saturday’s road trip, put this game in the proverbial rearview mirror and move on to the next opponent.

The Frontier Regional School football team had a tough outing Saturday afternoon, falling to Cathedral High School, 44-8, in an Intercounty League game at Berte Field at Central High School.

The loss dropped the Red Hawks to 1-1 on the season, while the Panthers evened their record at 1-1.

Turnovers were a huge factor for Frontier’s struggles, as four first-half follies helped Cathedral build a commanding 38-8 halftime lead. Cathedral’s defensive line was also a dominant factor, creating pressure throughout for the Red Hawks’ offensive line.

“Just poor fundamentals starting with the quarterback-center exchange,” Frontier coach Don Gordon said. “We never had problems like that before and, all of a sudden, we are turning the ball over like that. We have four freshmen starting on defense and they just outmanned us. Their down linemen, they got a dozen guys over 200 pounds and it showed.”

Falling behind 20-0 at the end of the first quarter, Frontier put its first and only points on the board in the second. Starting on its own 42-yard line, the Red Hawks moved the ball with the help of a Cathedral facemask penalty that moved the ball into Panther territory. Three plays later, Red Hawk quarterback Oliver Fox hoisted an accurate pass to receiver Ian Blight, hittimg him in stride on his way to a 47-yard TD completion. Fox then found Tim Hoar for the conversion with 7 minutes, 22 seconds remaining in the first half.

Cathedral followed with 18 unanswered points to close out the first half.

“Coming out of the Suburban League last year, we are just hungry,” Cathedral coach Mike Robidoux said. “Frontier did a good coaching job over there. Turnovers — that is high school football. We had our share last week against Ludlow.”

Frontier heads to Turners Falls High School Friday night at 7.
