Manny’s, Teddies lose openers
Dusty Mones threw five innings of one-hit ball but, unfortunately for Manny’s TV & Appliance, its starting pitcher gave up five hits and two runs in the first inning and Wilbraham Funeral Home opened the best-of-three Tri-County League quarterfinals with a 2-1 victory Monday night at Farrell Field in Wilbraham.
After seventh-seeded Manny’s scored one run in the top of the first to take the early lead, Mones got tagged for a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame as second-seeded Wilbraham went on top. Mones settled in and allowed just one more hit the rest of the way, but the Manny’s offense was unable to generate anything further off Wilbraham pitcher Mike Krupczak, who helped Wilbraham take a 1-0 series lead.
Manny’s took a 1-0 lead in the first as Greg Vouros worked a one-out walk, went to third on a Kyle Henry single and scored on Brian Hayes’ single to left field. Wilbraham came right back and got five straight one-out singles, including RBI base hits from Ted Lerud and Zach Bombard.
“I think they were sort of sitting on his off-speed stuff in the first inning and he was getting a lot of pitches up,” Manny’s coach Lee Magee said. “A lot of their hits were to the opposite field. After that, he threw more fastballs and threw in to a lot of hitters. He definitely kept us in the game. Unfortunately we just couldn’t push any more runs across after that first inning.”
Krupczak went the distance for the Undertakers, striking out nine and walking one in the victory.
Henry and Hayes both finished with two hits in the loss, while Eric Libardoni doubled.
The two teams will meet at Veterans Memorial Field this evening at 5:45 for Game 2 of the series.
Peoples 6, Teddy Bear 4 — Teddy Bear Pools saw its comeback attempt from six runs down in the seventh inning fall just short as it fell to Peoples Bank, 6-4, in Game 1 of the best-of-three TCL quarterfinals Monday night at Mackenzie Field in Holyoke.
Peoples starting pitcher Nick Noblit (nine strikeouts, no walks) threw a one-hitter over the first six innings for the top seed, allowing just a single to Chris Williams in the fifth inning. Peoples built a 6-0 lead over that span and turned the game over to reliever Mike Welch in the seventh.
That’s when things got interesting as Tory Buck led off the seventh with a triple and scored on Casey Blanchard’s single. Zach Bartak followed with the second triple of the inning when he crushed one to deep right-center to plate Blanchard with the second run of the frame. After Nick Marscher popped to second for the first out of the inning, Bartak came around to score on Williams’ ground out, which left the bases empty with two outs. Dan Kane and Tristan Ward kept the team’s hopes alive with back-to-back singles and Andrew Sadowski made it three hits in a row when he drove in Kane on his single, which put the tying run on first. Peoples reliever Andy Gaines finally got out of the game by getting Corey Shearer to pop to short for the final out of the game.
Peoples took a 2-0 lead in the second inning as Dan Gomez hit a sacrifice fly and Joe Ferry hit an RBI ground out off Teddy Bear starter Joey Larson. The Bankers added a third run in the third as Mike Dombrowski hit a two-out double and scored on Dave Clark’s RBI single. Peoples kept the offense going in the fourth as Sam Barron hit a two-run single, while Clark hit an RBI ground out for his second RBI of the game.
Larson finished with two walks in 3 1-3 innings in the loss, while Sadowski came on and pitches 2 2-3 innings of relief, walking three.
The two teams will meet at Valiton Field in South Deerfield this evening at 5:45 for Game 2 of the series.
