Greenfield boys’ track beats Turners, Athol
Greenfield High School won every field event en route to a sweep of Turners Falls High School (100-35) and Athol High School (103-32) in an Intercounty League boys’ track and field double dual meet on Tuesday at the Bourdeau Complex in Turners Falls.
Tyler Miller and Vlad Popusoi each won three events against both opponents. Miller jumped 5 feet, 10 inches to capture the high jump, fired the javelin 138-1 to win that event and stopped the clock in 59.9 seconds to win the 400 meters. Popusoi, meanwhile, was tops in the triple jump (35-8.25), 110 high hurdles (19.1) and 400 intermediate hurdles (64.4).
Ben Darmanchev added a pair of firsts in the shot put (44-4.5) and long jump (17-0.5), and Jackson earned blue ribbons in the mile (5:14) and 2 mile (11:41) for the Green Wave.
Tyler Peters won the only event for the Indians, as he took the 100 meters (12.8) against Greenfield.
Giovanni Palermo swept the 100 (12.3) and 200 (24.6) for the Red Raiders’ lone event wins.
Greenfield (2-1) travels to Frontier Regional School on Monday.
St. Mary 3, Greenfield 2 — St. Mary High School swept all three singles matches to edge Greenfield, 3-2, in a Tri-County League boys’ tennis match on Tuesday at Stanley Park in Westfield.
Greenfield was able to win both doubles matches. Ben Westerman and Pat Crowningshield outlasted Austin Gois and Matt Benoit, 6-4, 3-6, (11-9), at No. 1, and Nick Brandl and Jackson Pelletier bested Jack Nielsen and James Marshi, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 2.
Greenfield (2-2) hosts Mohawk today at 3:30.
E. Longmeadow 3, Athol 0 — Athol High School struggled early and never fully recovered as it dropped a 25-13, 25-22, 25-10 verdict to East Longmeadow High School in a PVIAC East Division boys’ volleyball match Tuesday in East Longmeadow.
Jose Sierra led the Red Raiders with 12 digs. Erik Aikey collected six kills and four blocks,
Tyler Lajoie added four kills, five assists and a block, Lorenzo Carra dished out six assists and
Wyatt Doiron-LaRue contributed four kills.
Athol (3-5, 0-2 East) hosts Belchertown High School on Friday at 5.
