11 unbeaten at WMass wrestling

Eleven local wrestlers remain unbeaten after Day 1 of the Western Mass. Division III Wrestling Championships at Monument Mountain Regional High School on Friday in Great Barrington.

The eleven unbeatens advanced to this morning’s semifinals, before the victors wrestle in the championship bouts, scheduled to take place this evening at 6 p.m.

Franklin County Technical School has four wrestlers in the championship-bracket semifinals, including its two top seeds in David Weed (145 pounds) and Kyle Laffey (152). Weed bumped up a weight class due to an injury that caused him to put on some weight, but it made little difference as he got a first-round bye before earning a pin in the quarterfinals. He will take on fourth-seeded Jacob Gray (Hampshire Regional High School) in the semifinals. Laffey also earned a first-round bye before making short work of Belchertown High School’s Ben Fisher via a pin in the quarters. Laffey will take on fifth-seeded Brandon Weyant (Hampshire) this morning.

Third-seeded Josh Lacosse is also in the semifinals after a pin and a 9-1 decision in his first two matches at 120. He will face Dean Technical High School’s David Brazeau in the semifinals. Brett Bean was the biggest local underdog to remain unbeaten after he earned a pin in his first match before upsetting third-seeded Caymen Mead (Mt. Greylock Regional High School) by first-period pin in the quarterfinals. Bean will face second-seeded Tyler Dittrich (Southwick High School) in the semifinals. Seven other Eagle wrestlers — Tyler Rock (113), Aleks Giurgiu (126), Gabe Stafford (138), Curtis Garey (182), Gabe Vorce (195), Alec Milton (220), Jonathan Rawls (285) — remain alive in the consolation bracket.

Pioneer has three wrestlers remaining in the championship bracket. Adam Leblanc, the fourth seed at 138 pounds, earned a pin and a decision on Day 1 and will face top-seeded Bobby O’Connell (South Hadley High School) in the semifinals. Lucas Rathbun, the second seed at 160, earned a pair of first-period pins in his first two matches of the tournament, setting him up for a showdown with Monument Mountain’s Mark Leon-Duque. Phil Peduzzi, the second seed at 195, earned a first-round bye before scoring a pin to move to the semifinals where he will take on Frontier Regional School’s Chris Toomey, the third seed.

Toomey was one of two Red Hawks still standing in the championship bracket. Ben McGranaghan advanced to today’s semifinals at 106 pounds after a decision and a pin on Day 1. He will face Sabis International Charter School’s Isaiah Williams.

Athol High School’s Christian Currier is the third local top seed and he remains alive and well at 220 after a bye and pin on Day 1. He will face Dean Tech’s Phillip Fernandez this morning. Tom LaRose, the second seed at 170 pounds, is the other remaining Red Raider in the championship bracket. He earned a first-round bye and a pin in his quarterfinal match, setting him up for a semifinal showdown against Gateway Regional High School’s Sam Rexer.
