Sandy shuts it all down

Maybe Mother Nature never wants the fall sports season to end?

Last year it was an October snowstorm that gave local coaches and athletic directors headaches as they tried to complete the high school sports regular season. This year its a hurricane named Sandy, otherwise known as the “Frankenstorm.”

Sandy caused the entire slate of high school games and meetings originally scheduled for Monday to be postponed to later dates.

The biggest casualty was the Western Massachusetts Field Hockey Meeting, which was originally scheduled for 9 a.m. at Northampton High School to select seeds but was postponed to a later date. At press time, no official word on when the meeting would be rescheduled was available.

The Division III State Golf Tournament scheduled for Monday at Red Tail Golf Club in Devens was moved to Wednesday at 11 a.m.

Finally, the slate of seven other local soccer and volleyball matches was completely wiped out, but just like when last season’s snowstorm hit, the cutoff date for soccer and volleyball is now in jeopardy. That date for soccer was supposed to be by the end of today, meaning that any tourney-bound teams needed to have completed their schedules by the end of the day. There was no word as to what will happen should today’s games also be postponed, although last season the MIAA simply eliminated the from the schedule. If a team needed one final win to get in and had a game remaining that could not be played, it could apply for a waiver.

The cutoff date for volleyball is Wednesday.
