Earl runs wild in Eagles’ win
Jake Earl rushed 19 times for 344 yards and six touchdowns as Franklin County Technical School exploded past Dean Technical High School, 38-6, in a Tri-County League football game Friday night at the Roberts Complex in Holyoke.
“The offensive line did a great job opening up holes for him,” Tech coach Joe Gamache said of the performance. “He saw the field really well tonight, he made some nice cuts, and in the open field he really made some nice runs.”
Earl had two touchdowns of 90-plus yards and another one for 60 helping him to the monster performance. The Eagles’ running back opened the scoring 2 minutes, 8 seconds into the game when Earl scored from 6 yards out. He then scored with 4:23 left in the first quarter on a 60-yard run. He closed out the first quarter by taking a handoff 90 yards with no time left on the clock for the third Eagle touchdown of the quarter. The point-after kick failed after all three touchdowns and the Eagles held a 18-0 lead.
Dean (0-7 overall, 0-5 TCL) scored its lone touchdown of the game with 3:50 left in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 18-6 at the break.
Franklin Tech (3-5, 2-3) punched in three more scores after the break to ice the win. Earl scored midway through the third quarter on a 14-yard run and also carried in the extra point. Then, in the fourth, he scored from 1-yard out, and added a 94-yard scoring run to complete his night.
C.J. Daignault added 47 yards on two carries. Ethan Wickline picked off a pass to highlight a solid defensive effort.
Belchertown 25, Frontier 8 — Belchertown High School used a solid defensive effort to hold off Frontier Regional School, 25-8, in a Intercounty League football game Friday night in Belchertown.
The Orioles (7-0, 6-0) led 14-0 after one quarter as James Ryan scored on a 24-yard pass from Nick Leduc, and Ben Thornton returned an interception 32 yards to paydirt.
Frontier (2-4, 1-4) made it a one-score game in the second quarter as Chris Toomey scored on a 5-yard run and quarterback Rylan Baronas ran in the 2-point conversion.
Leduc put Belchertown ahead by two scores as he kicked a 34-yard field goal with 1:48 left in the third quarter. Ryan tacked on a 6-yard scoring run with 6:03 left in the game to put it away.
Toomey led Frontier with 47 yards on 18 carries, and Baronas added 20 yards on nine hauls. Baronas also went 6-for-9 passing for 56 yards. Dan Simanski caught two passes for 29 yards, and Oliver Fox finshed with two catches for 21 yards.
Ryan led the Orioles with 99 yards on 12 carries, while Leduc finished 3-for-8 for 38 yards.
Commerce 38, Mahar 0 — Dvonte Sewell scored four touchdowns on Friday night as High School of Commerce raced past Mahar Regional School, 38-0, in an IL football game at Central High School in Springfield.
Sewell scored three times in the second quarter to help Commerce (4-3, 3-3) to a 25-0 lead at halftime. Hassan Graham caught a 74-yard touchdown pass from Ben George in the opening quarter. That’s when Sewell broke out for his trio of scores, sandwiching an eight-yard scoring run around a pair of 30-yard rushing touchdowns.
Commerce tacked on two more scores in the third quarter as Shaki Holines scored from 1 yard out, and Sewell added a 15-yard run.
