Tech golfers repeat as state champs
Franklin County Technical School successfully defended its team championship on Wednesday, topping a field of 22 schools to capture its second straight State Vocational Golf Tournament at Ridder Farms Golf Club in East Bridgewater.
The Eagles recorded a final team score of 316, which was 10 strokes ahead of runner-up Shawsheen Valley Regional Technical High School of Billerica.
Franklin Tech senior Troy Miller was the tournament’s low medalist, as he carded a solid 1-over-par 71 on the 5,556, par-70 layout. Teammate Cody Booska, a junior, followed with a 3-over 73 to finish third overall.
Josh Dempsey posted an 83 and Trevor Blake added an 89 to complete to the Eagles’ team scoring.
“I’m very pleased, the guys did a fabulous job,” said Franklin Tech head coach Paul Doran, whose squad edged Shawsheen — the 2010 champion — by three strokes to win the 2011 crown. “I would have been happy with a one-stroke win, but I was shocked by 10. ... There’s a lot of water and bunkers, and it’s a very challenging course. They all played very good rounds. I’m really proud of them.”
Franklin Tech will try to win their second significant title in three weeks during the Western Mass. Division III Championship at Tekoa Country Club in Westfield.
