Bulletin Board: Turners Falls boys rule

Turners Falls captured the DRIVE Hoops Middle School Boys’ Basketball League championship with a 61-44 victory over Amherst Wednesday night at Indoor Action Sports in Greenfield.

Kyle Dodge led the champions with 12 points. Taylen Pope was Amherst’s top scorer with 12.

In the consolation game, Mill Street Concrete Rockers downed Frontier, 30-23.

Clayton Garland had 9 points for Mill Street, while Kalen Evans netted a game-high 12 for Frontier.

• In Girls’ Middle School playoff action Wednesday at Greenfield Middle School, Turners Falls bested Greenfield, 19-14, behind Lexi Lacey’s 6 points.

Samantha Smith finished with 7 points for Greenfield.

Also, Jill McGrath’s 11 points led Northampton over Frontier, 35-11.

Penelope Hosley scored 4 points for Frontier.

• In Boys’ JV League playoff action, FC Tech won a pair of games, beating Frontier (55-40) and Noho (63-62).

Zach Johnson hit for 18 in the Frontier win, and drained 27 against Noho to lead FC Tech.

Frontier was led by Ben Litskoski’s 15 points, and Devon Long was Noho’s top scorer with 18.

Elsewhere, Tucker Llewelyn poured in 30 points during Whitney Fencing’s 84-47 rout of Hinsdale, N.H.

Dan O’Melia led Hinsdale with 18.

Finally, Hubbard Heating & Cooling received 15 points from George Felogloy in a 50-49 win over Hadley.

Jon Morrison had 15 for Hadley.


K of C League

Bill O’Neill recorded the top point quota at plus-8 during Knights of Columbus Golf League play Wednesday at Thomas Memorial Golf & Country Club in Turners Falls.

Bruce MacConnell was second with a plus-5. He also came closest to the pin on No. 7 (8 feet, 6 inches). Steve Ciechomski was closest to the pin on No. 9 (11-0).

Thomas Memorial Ladies

Anne Corrinet’s plus-10 was the top point quota in the Thomas Memorial Ladies Golf League on Wednesday in Turners Falls.

Barb Howey took second at plus-6.

Sally Malloy carded a 42 for low gross, and came closest to the pin on No. 7 (18-1).

CFC Ladies

Mace Foehl posted a 21 to claim low gross win the Pick Five Holes Tournament during the Crumpin-Fox Ladies Golf League Wednesday in Bernardston.

Maggie Haigis took low net with a 15.

Haigis was also closest to the pin on No. 3 (7-5) and Foehl was closest on No. 9 (7-2).

Youth baseball

Babe Ruth Fall Ball

The Franklin County Babe Ruth Baseball League will hold its final registration session for its Fall League Saturday morning from 9 a.m. until noon at Abercrombie Field in Greenfield.

The league is open to players ages 12 to 15 (as of April 30) and is an excellent opportunity for 12-year-olds to get experience on a 90-foot diamond. The fee is $60, and the league will begin on the first weekend in September.

Meanwhile, the league will hold its general membership meeting tonight at 6 at St. Kazimierz Society in Turners Falls.

Belanger fundraiser

The 11th annual Greg Belanger Memorial Scholarship fundraiser is scheduled for Saturday at the South Deerfield Polish Club.

Belanger was a 24-year-old Army officer serving in Iraq with the 325th Military Intelligence Battalion when killed in action on Aug. 27, 2003. The vehicle he was riding in was struck by an improvised explosive device near Hallia.

Over the years, his family has raised thousands of dollars in his memory to help his graduates from alma mater, Frontier Regional School, pay for college tuition. This afternoon’s event begins at 4 p.m. and will include dinner, drink and raffles.


GMS football

The Greenfield Middle School football team will hold its opening day practice Monday at 5 at Veterans Memorial Field in Greenfield.

Any seventh and eighth graders interested in playing should show up. All players should bring the necessary paperwork to practice, including physical forms. Anyone needing forms can find them on the Greenfield Public Schools website or at the middle school or high school offices.
