Local tandems have good day in WMass Pro-Junior

Chris Austin and James Elliott of Crumpin-Fox Club in Bernardston tied Dan LaPierre and Rod Joslin at 6-under-par 66 to win the 15-to-18-year-old division of the Western Massachusetts Section PGA Pro-Junior Championship golf tournament at the Country Club of Greenfield on Thursday.

LaPierre and Shawn Ferris tied for third with a 67 and were even with two teams, each headed by pro Josh Hillman. The Greenfield native teamed with Matt Wisseman to post a 67, and he also paired up with Connor Morton for a 67 to share third.

Country Club of Greenfield head pro Kevin Piecuch paired with Jon Farrell to shoot a 66 and capture the 14-and-under division. Chris Tallman and Mike Corduff came in second with a 67.

Three teams — Hillman and Kyle Alvarez, Mike Berchard and Mikey Berchard, and Crumpin-Fox’s Mike Zaranek and Tim Fay — tied for third with a 68.

Road racing

Northfield Series

Nathan Santerre won the Northfield Road Race Summer Series event on Thursday night as he finished the 3.3-mile course in 20 minutes, 20 seconds.

Dave Kaczenski came in second at 22:02, while Aaron Lanou (22:32), Charlie White (24:18) and Derek Postema (24:24) rounded out the top 5.

Michelle Swan was the top female finisher with a time of 28:57. Jamie Talbot came in second at 29:37, and Cassandra Bigelow placed third at 29:53.

This week’s race theme was Red, White and Blue and Jamie Talbot, Angela Killay and Steve Talbot each won prizes for best patriotic costumes.

Adult softball

Montague Co-Rec

Kustom Auto Body was hitting the ball so hard on Thursday night that singles were the toughest hits to come by.

Two players finished a single shy of hitting for the cycle as Kustom Auto Body drilled Main Street Bar & Grille, 22-0, in a Montague Co-Rec Adult Softball League game at Green River Park in Greenfield.

Matt Luippold went 4-for-5 with a home run, triple and two doubles in the win, while Sam Parker was 4-for-4 with two triples, a home run and a double.

Frank Stumpo went 2-for-2 in the loss.

Basketball

DRIVE summer programs

DRIVE Hoops will conduct a variety of programs during the summer, including:

• Leagues for men, boys and girls varsity, boys junior varsity, boys and girls middle school and boys and girls grades 5 and 6;

• 17th annual FCHC basketball clinic with John Hickey and Angelo Thomas, from July 21 to 25, at Greenfield Middle School;

• DRIVE Hoops Skills Clinic with Angelo Thomas, from July 28 to Aug. 1, at Hopkins Academy in Hadley.
