Martin opens 48th GML season in style with 5-0 win

Butch Martin opened his 48th year of coaching in the Greenfield Minor League on Sunday by guiding Denny’s Pantry to a 5-0 win over Gilmore & Farrell Insurance in a Major Division game at Lunt Field.
Jack Loud and Evan Leaf each pitched three innings for Denny’s and both pitchers struck out six in the win. Julian Trenholm singled and doubled for Denny’s, while Leaf and Josiah Beck each had two hits. Peter Loud added a single.
Nick Crocker had the lone hit in the loss. Hunter Roberts and Tucker Scott each pitched well for Gilmore & Farrell.
• In other action, Jared Hart struck out eight in four innings of work to lead Greenfield Elks Lodge to a 12-3 win over New Fortune Restaurant.
Hart also paced the offense in the win, crushing a two-run home run and also hitting an RBI single for Elks. Ryan Cote went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the win, Troy Emond doubled and drove in two runs, and Cameron Rice tripled and drove in two runs. Zach Renaud hit an RBI single and Emond pitched two scoreless innings with three strikeouts.
Zack Martineau and Kyle Devlin each doubled for New Fortune. Shane Kilgour, Grayson Funk and Anthony Holmes finished with one hit apiece.
• Elsewhere, Samantha Smith clubbed a pair of home runs and drove in five runs to lead Smitty’s Pub to a 16-7 win over Maniatty’s.
Cam Baird and Colby Avery each pitched three innings in the win and combined to strike out eight. Baird finished with two hits, and Katie Haselton finished a home run shy of the cycle. Brodie Baird belted a three-run home run in his first Major Division at bat, and Kyle White singled and doubled.
Hunter Drost and Michael McGoldrick each doubled in the loss.
• In Triple A Division action, Michael Zager and Drew Conant combined to strike out 13 batters in a two-hitter as D&D Drywall defeated Rotary, 11-3.
Brendan Moorehouse and Jake Croteau each finished with two hits in the win, while Marcus Paulin Jr. tripled and drove in a pair of runs.
Casey Hoffman Jr. tripled in the losing effort and Julian Rodriguez singled.
• In other action, Gabriel Zaccheo collected two hits as Ninety Nine Restaurant edged Tognarelli Heating & Cooling, 11-8.
Trevor Kuchieski doubled in the win and Jason Andrews earned the victory on the mound.
Gillis MacDougall pitched well in the loss and T.J. Thibeault had a double.
• Finally, Ezra Christi, Luc Belhumeur and Alex Sulda each pitched well to lead Aubuchon Hardware to a 11-4 win over Freedom Credit Union.
Sulda and Luke Timberlake each singled in the win.
Dylan Demers, Chris Knight and Ethan Bross each had one hit in the losing effort.
Tri-County Cal Ripken
Josh Kirley and Jake Quinn combined to strike out 16 hitters as Northfield Blue defeated Northfield/Bernardston Green, 14-2, in a Tri-County Cal Ripken Major Division game Sunday at Pratt Field in Bernardston.
Kirley struck out nine over the first four innings of play to earn the win, while Quinn fanned seven in three innings to earn the save. Quinn also finished with three hits, including a triple, while Sean Damon belted a two-run home run as part of a three-hit performance.
Noah Feuss struck out eight in three innings in the loss and also smacked an RBI triple.
• In Minor Division play, Bob Provost struck out six in three innings pitched in his first-ever appearance on the mound as Mowry & Schmidt Bernardston defeated Erving, 6-0, at Pratt Field.
Tanner Rowe struck out the side in the fourth inning in the win.
Newt Guilbault League
Marcus Sanders and Colby Mailloux combined to strike out 13 hitters on Sunday and pitch Booska’s Flooring to a 3-2 victory over Montague Elks Lodge during opening day of the Newt Guilbault Community League at Gamelin Field in Turners Falls.
Mailloux also uncorked a solo home run and stole home on another occasion. Sanders added one hit and stole home.
Bailey Young tripled, drove in a run and scored once for Elks. Trevor Lapinski and Graham Pezzati pitched well in the losing effort.
• Finally, Bryce Hill and Michael Patnode each finished with two hits and Greenfield Savings Bank knocked off St. Kazimierz Society, 7-4.
Jack Putala tripled for GSB.
David Carey and Jake Dodge each had a hit for St. Kaz.
Frontier 9s fall
Devin Niles scored twice on Saturday, including a penalty kick, but Frontier suffered a 7-2 loss to Agawam in a Pioneer Valley Junior Soccer League Under-9 Division game in Wilbraham.
Quinn McNutt picked up an assist in the loss. Jake Petrin and Dashiell Polson-Filas each made four saves in net.
Tyler Miner scored a pair of goals on Sunday to lead the Devils to a 8-3 win over the Eagles in the Pioneer Valley Spring Hockey League at Smead Arena in Springfield.
Daniel Chabot, Joe Letendre, Angelo Morace, Zach Demars, Dominic Falvo and Vinnie Cardaropoli each scored once in the win. Nick Taylor, Cassidhe Wozniak, Tyler Miner, Aurel Pydych, Devan Rivera, Alex Malinowski, Dalton Rice, Dan Chabot, and Falvo each had a helper. Dalton Rice finished with 13 saves in the win.
• On Saturday, Falvo scored but the Devils fell to the Aces, 8-1.
Rice finished with 24 saves in the loss.
