Opening weekend is here for most youth leagues

A number of youth baseball and softball leagues get underway this weekend throughout Franklin County.

The Frontier Cal Ripken Youth League opens next weekend.

Here’s a brief look at what is going on from those who contacted The Recorder:

Greenfield Minor League

The Greenfield Minor League will open up on Sunday with its traditional parade down Federal Street in Greenfield at 11 a.m.

The grand marshal of the event this year is Greenfield native and former Major League Baseball player Peter Bergeron. Opening day ceremonies will take place at Lunt Field following the parade and games will follow beginning with the Rookie League at 1, the Minor Division at 3 and the Major Division at 5:30.

Tri-County League

The Tri-County Cal Ripken Youth League will begin both softball and baseball play this weekend and will kick off Sunday morning at 10 a.m.with a parade from Kringle Candle to Pratt Field in Bernardston.

Opening day ceremonies will follow the parade with games beginning at 11 a.m. with a Minor Division game that will be followed by a Major Division game at 12:45.

Softball games will also take place at Pratt Field on Sunday.

Newt Guilbault League

The Newt Guilbault Community League kicks off Sunday morning at 11 a.m. with the traditional parade to Gamelin and Campbell Fields in Turners Falls.

Opening ceremonies will follow the parade before a full schedule of games going on throughout the day from 1-5.

Greenfield Girls’ Softball

The Greenfield Girls’ Softball League will open play on Saturday morning with the traditional parade from Valley Medical Center to Murphy Park in Greenfield.

An Opening ceremony will take place at noon and games will run from 1-4:30 p.m.

May 3

Frontier Cal Ripken

The Frontier Cal Ripken Youth Baseball League opens on May 3.
