Bulletin Board: Edge division champion
The EDGE 16-and-under AAU boys’ basketball team captured its division championship in the MASS Premier Tip Off Classic Tournament over the weekend in Foxborough.
EDGE 16 won its crown with a 64-56 win over the Bay State Jaguars 64-56, to finish off a 3-1 weekend. Brad Hastings led the champions with 22 points. Kyle Artus added 10 points. Josh Willis and Jake Willis both finished with 9.
The 16U squad beat SE Shockers (57-39) and Bay State Blizzard (64-40) and lost to Bay State Magic, 43-39. Hastings averaged 22.0 points per game in the four contests to lead the way. Josh Willis added 7.3 and Levin DuPree 6.5 per outing.
EDGE’s 14-and-under squad went 3-1 and lost in the finals to the RI Breakers, 57-46. Terrell Hicks led EDGE with 13 and Justin Hubbard added 10 in the final.
EDGE had beaten the RI Breakers (43-42) and as well as the Boston Warriors (57-53) and Team Narragansett (72-58) to advance to the finals. Brendon Emond averaged 13.8 and Hicks 10.5 per game.
The Edge 12-and-under finished 0-3, losing to Mass Warriors (53-49), Lake Shore Lakers (61-4) and Coach for Change (58-39). Garrett Cote led the locals with 10 points per game and Tyler Hastings added 7.3 per contest.
DRIVE Hoops in Boston
Four of the seven AAU boys’ basketball teams from DRIVE Hoops swept their two games during the Zero Gravity Tournament in Boston.
DRIVE’s 14-and-under A squad beat Mass Prep Stars (58-37) and Bay State Flash (62-28), led by Jon Morrison’s 14 points per game and Ben Litskoski’s 8 per contest. The 15Us downed Nashua B/G Club (61-40) and Mass Elite (55-37), as Kevin Mendez netted 15 a game and Connor Joy added 13.
The 16Us upended Dream Elite (49-44) and Mass Elite (55-42), behind 11 points a game from Tony Campedelli and 10 average from Spencer Butterfield, and the 17/18Us bested MA Rockets (54-49) and CMAC (61-39). Zach Kelley led the victors with 13 points a game, Tim Hoar 10.
The DRIVE 12U squad went 1-1 as it beat Mass Elite (37-35) and fell to VBC Elite (46-27). Andrew Ciaglo scored 8 points per game and Will Robbins chipped in 7 per outing.
The 13U and 14U B squad both went 0-2. The 13s lost to B2L (37-20) and Mass Elite (36-21). Anthony Peterson averaged 7 a game and Xavier Santiago 6 per game.
14U ‘B’ dropped games to NC Blaze (63-33) and The Academy (54-25). Hunter Campbell had a team-leading 9 points per game.
Frontier U13 ties
The Frontier Red Hawks played the Eagles to a 1-1 draw in Under-13 Indoor Soccer League play Sunday at Allsport Arena in Northampton.
Caitlyn Devine scored the only Hawks goal, while Marisela Ackerman played well in goal, making 36 saves. Hannah Kantor and Jenna Martin played well defensively.
The Red Hawks face the Northampton Blue Devils Wednesday at 4 p.m. in the championship game.
Tigers at WMass meet
The Greenfield Tumbling Tigers captured the team championship in the Xcel Silver level of the 2014 Western Mass League Championships over the weekend at the Hampshire Regional YMCA in Northampton.
Greenfield won the title with a score of 107.35, followed by host Hampshire at 105.75. Westfield finished third.
In the Senior category, Chelsea Mass recorded a win in vaulting (9.0) and second-place finishes on balance beam (9.0), uneven bars (9.0) and all-around (36.00).
Anna Huggett won bars (9.1) and took second on floor exercise (9.15), Cynthia Roy-Clark was third all-around, Jordan Lamere came in third on floor and Karma Phillips wound up third on beam.
In the Junior category, Jalen Sullivan placed second on vault (8.8) and third on bars and all-around. Shelby Jordan placed second on beam (8.5). Kathryn Hioe placed third on floor. Emily Ryan placed third on vault.
Hampshire swept the team competition in Levels 2, 3 and 4, while Greenfield placed third in each.
In Level 2 (Junior), Samantha Scanlon was tops in bars (8.5) and all-around (35.15) and garnered a second on floor (9.0), and Julia Hioe placed second on bars (8.1). In the Youth category, Eleanor Herbert placed second on bars (8.65), beam (9.1) and all-around (35.65), and Kiana Hoffman finished third on bars.
In Level 3 (Child), Krista Uzdavinis recorded firsts in vault (9.2) and floor (9.3), and ended up second all-around (33.00). Josie Cloutier placed third on vault, beam, floor and all-around, Ryan Blanchard was second on bars (8.4), Cassie Cloutier second on beam and Ashley Taylor third on bars.
In the Youth category, Emma Paulin won bars (9.1) and claimed third on floor and all-around, while Rory Cronen-Townsend won the vault (9.6). Katia Usachev (Junior) won vault (9.3) and placed third on bars, floor and all-around, and Keltyn Socquet (Senior) placed second on vault (9.15) and third on floor.
In Level 4 (Child), Hillary Leeds grabbed firsts in vault (8.9) and bars (8.3), while adding seconds in beam (8.7), All Around (34.35). Allyson Unaitis finished second on bars (8.15) and floor (9.0), and third on beam and all-around, and Zenani Himlin-Mayekiso placed third on vault. In the Youth category, Kathryn Mason tied for second on floor (9.4) and came in third on bars.
Among the individuals competing, Level 8 had the best overall performance.
Nora Roscoe captured the beam (8.4) and all-around (33.70) and took second on vault (8.5), Kayla Hamer won floor (9.2), placed second all-around (33.10) and was third on vault and bars, Heidi Leeds was first in vault (8.65) and bars (8.7) and second on beam, and Erin Laffond was second on beam (8.9).
Hannah Phillips (Level 1) won bars (9.2), beam (9.0) and all-around (36.15) and came in third on vault and floor, Courtney Kimball (Level 9) won the vault and bars, and was second on floor and all-around.
In Level 5, Sydney Unaitis was tops on bars and placed third on floor, while Amber Taylor placed third on bars.
In Xcel Gold, Fiona Ferry won the vault (8.65) and Emily Keyes took third on beam.
Registration is now open for the Greenfield Recreation Department Tee-Ball program.
The program, open to boys and girls ages 5 to 7, takes place at Green River Park and Greenfield Middle School on Saturdays from May 3 through June 7 from 8:30 to 10 a.m.
Registrations are being taken at the Greenfield Town Hall Citizen Service Center or The Recreation Department at the Greenfield Youth Center on Sanderson Street.
Registration fee is $30 per child for Greenfield Residents and $35 for non-residents. Volunteer Coaches are needed.
